NEWARK EARLY MUSIC COURSE - MOVING TO NEWCASTLE! NEW DATES: 29-31 JULY 2011 In 2005, cornettist Jamie Savan and I put together the first Early Music Weekend in his home town, Newark, Nottinghamshire UK. We had approximately 12 participants and played music from Renaissance dance band music through to sonatas and motets by Gabrieli and his associates. In the years that have followed, our course has grown, each year attracting new people and each year consisting of a nice mix of serious music students, experienced amateurs and relative beginners. The 2008 course saw a performance of Ockeghem's 36 part 'Deo Gratias', Giovanni Gabrieli's 33 part magnificat and a motet by Schütz which we performed in six choirs! I also had the previlige of directing a Gabrieli motet in 16 parts played on 14 sackbuts and 2 dulcians. The 2009 April course featured Padovano's glorious Mass in 24 parts. The aim each year is to include, and challenge everybody so that each participant leaves feeling that they have experienced something new and learnt something that will help them achieve their personal playing goals. As well as performing in the church service, we play tower music from the church tower and in the past have used the town's castle, town hall balcony and other churches to play poly-choral works. Other things we have covered in the past include playing from original notation in large settings and classes on ornamentation. For 2008, we opened the course to singers and were pleased to be joined by Faye Newton (soprano) and Steven Devine (keyboards) which meant that there was specialist vocal coaching, which was also available to the players. We hope that the 'vocal faculty' will grow in the same way that the wind instruments have. We also have a dedicated Facebook page with information, photographs and video-clips... | ||
